Yesterday Baseball

This era was called the dead ball era. It was called this way because of the type of ball used during this time, which was the core-ball. This made it difficult to players to score alot of runs. The most home runs in the era was hit by Babe Ruth(29) which at the time was the best feat the baseball world had seeen. This era was known for teams not scoring many runs and not many home runs being hit during this era. The pitchers ruled this era. In 1911 Frank Baker was nicknamed "Home Run Frank" for hitting two home runs in one game in the 1911 World Series. As the years more player started hitting more home runs and increasing their sluggling percentage.

There was alot of changes in the game of baseball during this era. in 1901 the foul strike was intriduced by the national league and 2 years later in 1903 the American Legue did too. The foul strike is when a batter hits the ball but it drops in foul territory, this is count as a strike.During this time the ball that was used in the game was not replaced until it shown any worness. This made it difficult for players to hit home runs since the ball was getting softer as the game went on. It was very difficult to have a comeback victory. Not only was it difficult to hit the ball because it was soft, pitchers also manipulated the ball. This manipulation by the pitchers was called the spitball. Pitchers would spat on the baseball, this action made the ball "dance" and curve more than it would without it. Pitcher would also added tobacco to the baseball, this made it difficult for the hitters to see the ball. It was very difficult specially since most of the dead ball era baseball was played during the day which meant there were shadows on the field which made it difficult to hit and field the ball. Ball parks in this era were known for having big dimensions. The average dimensions were : Left Field 540ft, Center Field 620ft, Right Field 298ft.
